Paying for Care Abroad: Deposits, Cards, Packages & Insurance Paperwork

International / VIP departments at many tertiary hospitals accept deposits, overseas cards, and clearer package quotes than general outpatient counters—but practices vary widely by hospital and city. China’s basic medical insurance generally does not cover foreign self-pay patients; overseas insurers decide reimbursement based on policy wording and invoice format.
Before travel, ask what is bundled versus itemized, how refunds work if a procedure is postponed, whether English itemized invoices are available, and whether your insurer accepts Chinese hospital stamps/chops. Seasonal checkup, aesthetic, or TCM wellness packages may reduce cash outlay but often exclude specialty drugs, advanced imaging, or pathology send-outs. Collect documentation your insurer typically requires after return.
