China medical travel visas and hospital invitation letters

Published by Lexaid, the brand of Shanghai Qile Wuyou Technology Co., Ltd. (其乐无忧). Company & brand

In brief

The useful question is not “what is the medical visa called,” but whether a hospital will issue an invitation or admission letter that matches your passport, and which ordinary visa category your local Chinese embassy or consulate currently accepts. Visa-free and transit options cover only some passports and stay lengths. Lexaid can help request letters and check spellings; we cannot guarantee a visa.

Our science column already covers the visa snapshot. This page is the evergreen version: split rules by post, nationality, and length of stay instead of copying a forum thread.

Regional facilitations (including some Hainan policies at times) do not replace hospital acceptance or a stay long enough for treatment. Align the clinical slot first, then pick an entry path.

Who this is for

  • Patients and named companions who need a hospital letter to explain a medical stay
  • Plans that last several weeks and must include observation days inside the visa window
  • Short assessment trips that may use visa-free or transit rules but still need a written hospital slot

Who this is not for

  • People already in China who only need to extend stay—that is an immigration process, not a letter alone
  • Using an invitation letter as a work permit or residence permit
  • Requests for a “guaranteed visa” or false itineraries

Steps

  1. 1

Get a hospital intent before choosing a visa type

Applying without an intended department and dates often produces a letter the post will query. Ask the international office whether they accept international patients for your condition and when.

  2. 2

    Fill the hospital’s invitation template

Typical fields: passport name and number, date of birth, department, expected dates, city of stay, companion names. The name must match the passport MRZ, including middle names. Do not redesign the hospital letter.

  3. 3

Follow the local embassy or visa-center checklist

The same passport can face different lists at different posts. Common items: form, photo, itinerary, funds, hospital letter. Some posts use short-term private affairs (S2) for medical stays. Use the live checklist and appointment system.

  4. 4

    Re-check visa-free and transit duration

If your nationality currently qualifies, verify entries allowed, maximum stay, onward-ticket rules, and whether medical treatment is an accepted purpose. If treatment may run long, a visa is usually safer than visa-free.

  5. 5

After the visa is issued, re-align the hospital slot

Validity and duration of stay are hard limits. If the hospital moves the date, check the visa window before you fly. Do not plan to “extend on arrival” as your default.

Why invitation letters get sent back

Name mismatches (missing middle name, reversed surname order, unexplained former names); dates written as “ASAP”; missing hospital name or contact; mixing a tourist story with a medical purpose.

Companions not listed, or a different companion count than the visa form, also trigger extra documents. One letter per family and one form per person is cleaner.

Costs

CostsNotes

Risks

  • Using an outdated blog to pick the visa category
  • Visa-free days too short for treatment or observation
  • Invitation dates too vague or too tight
  • Giving passport scans to unofficial agents

Confirm in writing with the hospital

  • Which office issues the letter and in how many working days
  • Whether companions are named
  • Whether the letter can be updated if outpatient becomes inpatient
  • Which original IDs to bring on admission day

FAQ

Is there a single national medical visa?
Not in the sense of one nationwide product identical to some other countries. Practice is ordinary visa category plus hospital documents, set by the local post.
Can I come visa-free to see a doctor?
Sometimes, if your nationality and stay length fit current visa-free or transit rules. Inpatient care, cell therapy, or repeat visits usually need a visa. Follow NIA and embassy publications.

We help assemble the hospital letter and checklist. We are not a visa agency and cannot guarantee the outcome.
How long does the invitation letter take?
Often several working days to two weeks. Build that into ticket and VAC appointments.
