SOD1-ALS: Tofersen and Gene-Modifying Therapy
Published by Lexaid, the brand of Shanghai Qile Wuyou Technology Co., Ltd. (其乐无忧). Company & brand
This briefing explains what the technology is meant to do, who might be discussed for it, and what it does not replace. It is not medical advice and does not promise tumor shrinkage, functional recovery, or a cure. Eligibility, the receiving hospital, and the bill must be confirmed in writing by that hospital. Do not stop standard treatment unless the specialist agrees.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progressively kills the motor neurons that drive muscle. Most people have no clear family history. About 10% is genetic, involving genes such as SOD1, C9orf72, FUS, and TARDBP. Riluzole and edaravone slow the disease only to a limited extent. Gene-modifying therapy is about reducing a toxic gene product, not a general nerve supplement.

Tofersen covers SOD1 only
Tofersen (Qalsody) is an antisense oligonucleotide against SOD1, given by lumbar puncture into spinal fluid. The briefing says neurofilament light chain falls after treatment, that the European Academy of Neurology lists it among first-line options for SOD1-ALS, and that it is approved in the United States, the EU, China, and Japan. It works only for SOD1 mutations, which the source estimates at about 2% of all ALS. C9orf72, FUS, and TARDBP are not tofersen indications. CRISPR editing is still described as a clinical-trial direction, not a drug that can be prescribed.

The briefing says that on 21 March 2024 the first tofersen injection in China was given at Ruijin Hospital Hainan, affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, in Lecheng. It also says Lecheng specialty-drug insurance lists the drug and that eligible people may be reimbursed about 80%, with exclusions for pre-existing conditions. That depends on the policy text. It is not a Lexaid promise. Confirming SOD1 by genetic testing is the first step. Loading intrathecal doses and later maintenance are scheduled by neurology.
